Bike Bell is a bicycle bell for a handlebar-mounted iPhone. Tap anywhere on the screen to ring — or ring straight from the Lock Screen, without unlocking the phone.
Setting it up
After installing, iOS requires you to place each control yourself. None of these appear automatically.
Lock Screen button
Press and hold the Lock Screen → Customise → Lock Screen → tap one of the two buttons at the bottom → choose Bike Bell.
Control Centre
Swipe down from the top-right corner → + → Add a Control → search for "Bike Bell".
Back Tap — best for riding
Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap → Double Tap → Ring Bell. This is the only fully hands-free way to ring while your hands stay on the handlebars.
Action Button
On iPhone 15 Pro and later: Settings → Action Button → swipe to Shortcut → choose Ring Bell.
Siri
Say "Ring my Bike Bell".
Ride mode
Tapping Start ride in the app puts a large bell button on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island for the whole ride, along with elapsed time and a ring counter. Tap End ride to clear it. A ride expires automatically after about eight hours.
Starting a ride automatically
You can have ride mode begin on its own whenever you start a cycling workout:
- Shortcuts → Automation → +
- Choose Workout
- Set When → Cycling, and Is Started
- Tap Next → Run Immediately, and turn Notify When Run off
- Add action → search Start Bike Ride
Add a matching automation on Is Ended with End Bike Ride to clear it when you finish.
Bell sounds
Three sounds are included — Classic (a single bright ding), Double (two strikes) and Trill (a rapid rotary bell). Choose one in Settings, with a live preview as you switch.
Troubleshooting
The bell is too quiet, or silent
Bike Bell always plays at full volume and deliberately has no volume slider of its own — your phone's media volume is the single ceiling. Check, in order:
- Turn the phone's volume up with the side buttons, or use the volume slider in the app's Settings screen.
- Disconnect your headphones or AirPods. If audio is routed to headphones, the bell plays into your ears and nobody around you hears it. The app shows a warning when it detects this.
- The bell is designed to ring even with the ring/silent switch set to silent, so the switch is not the problem — but a Focus mode or very low media volume can still make it quiet.
The Lock Screen or Control Centre button doesn't appear
Open the app once after installing, then try adding the control again. The control appears under the name "Bike Bell" when you search in the control picker.
The bell doesn't ring from the Lock Screen
Make sure you added the control as described above rather than a Home Screen widget — a widget cannot play sound, which is exactly why the app uses a Control instead. If it still does nothing, restart the phone; iOS occasionally needs this after installing an app that provides new controls.
My music stops when the bell rings
Turn on Duck other audio in Settings. Your music or navigation will dip briefly for the ding and then return, instead of stopping.
